A Day Out at Fairbourne
This event is now over, did anybody go? was it a good day? How about writing a few words for others to read?
On Sunday 25th March 2012 the Branch Line Society is arranging comprehensive visits of “all available tracks” at the 12 1/4” Fairbourne Railway and the historic 2’3″ gauge Corris Railway.
For the Fairbourne Railway www.fairbournerailway.com the track plan is shown on page 20B of Quail 4. It is intended that the currently disused return ‘balloon loop’ will be specially dug out (being full of sand) for the tour and arrangements made to traverse the line beyond Fairbourne terminus, round the right angled bend along side the Cambrian Coast line, to the depot and workshop. Anticipated cost £20 per head. Traction will be BOTH diesels HE9354 and the 1961 built Guest, currently being extensively refurbished – this will be the first run of the “Guest” in many years.
At the historic Corris Railway http://www.corris.co.uk/index.php which now has considerably more trackwork than shown in Quail 4 p50, recent BLS tours of this very friendly railway have been extremely comprehensive. At Maespoeth Junction there is the start of the former upper Corris Tramway Incline up to the A487, the original Corris engine shed, southern line extremity, carriage and other sidings etc. Anticipated cost £10 per head, again with diesel traction.
Stock lists and track maps will be provided, and shed visits included at both locations – there is also an interesting museum at Corris.
Placed are limited to only 30 people so PROMPT BOOKING is strongly recommended – these events are not likely to be repeated in the short term.
Everyone is welcome to participate including non members.
